How to read this record
Every claim is tagged
Most family trees flatten everything into the same confident typeface. This one does not.
The three research tags below are the whole point of the exercise: they say what a document
proves, what the weight of evidence suggests, and what nobody has found yet. A fourth marks
what the family stated directly, where no document has been retrieved at all — it is kept
separate on purpose and is never quietly promoted to confirmed. A fifth, added on
13 September 2026, marks biological evidence: a DNA result is not a document, and it is not
testimony either. Two further labels mark where this page withholds information
rather than lacking it.
ConfirmedAttested by a document that was actually retrieved and read — a census sheet, a
government index, a grave marker, a family-written obituary.
ProbableStrongly supported but not nailed down: a user-contributed tree, a masked index field,
or a chain of consistent circumstances. Believable, not proven.
Not foundSearched for and not located. This is a statement about the search, not about the
person — the record may well exist somewhere unsearched.
Family testimonySupplied by the family and recorded on their word — no document has been retrieved for
it. Note the diamond rather than the dot: this is provenance, not proof, and it stands
apart from the three record tags above S24.
DNA evidenceBiological evidence consistent with a claim. It corroborates origins; it does
not by itself establish a person or a link. Note the bar rather than a dot or a diamond:
no DNA result on this page is ever counted as confirmed, because no document
was read for it S46.
Living — withheldThe person is living. By the privacy rule for this page, name and relationship are
shown, and at most a year the family has already published. Full dates of birth, ages,
places of residence and record identifiers are held back.
Research in progressA branch that is actively being worked on. The node exists in the structure so the
shape of the family is honest; the detail is simply not in yet.

Research status
Research status: PROBABLE — accepted by Earl 28 September 2026 pending more evidence. The New Jersey return of deaths for Upper Pittsgrove Township, Salem County, records
Mary Timberman, married, 70, who died on 6 June 1858 at Upper Alloways Creek, born in Upper Pittsgrove,
parent Benjamin Burroughs, of consumption
S860. In 1850 Samuel Timberman, 71, a farmer, headed a Pilesgrove household with a Mary Timberman
S861, and Harriet Timberman's marriage names her parents as Sam'l and Mary Timberman
S862. John H. Timberman's 1857 marriage names his father as Samuel Timberman. What is weak: no document names Mary Burroughs as Samuel's wife or as John H.'s mother; the 1850 Mary is written as 32, not about 62, and John H. is not in that house; and FamilySearch indexes a Samuel Timberman marriage to Mary Ann Applegate in Salem County, a second Samuel or a second wife.
Evidence: Mary Timberman's 1858 New Jersey death return names her parent as Benjamin Burroughs; a Samuel and Mary Timberman head a Pilesgrove household in 1850 and are named as Harriet Timberman's parents, and John H. Timberman's 1857 marriage names his father Samuel. Weak or missing: No document names Mary Burroughs as Samuel's wife or John H.'s mother; the 1850 Mary is written as 32, John H. is not in the house, and a Samuel Timberman x Mary Ann Applegate marriage is also indexed in Salem County. Generation 7 — Earl's earliest known
- S374Salem County, New Jersey — Return of Births, Upper Alloways Creek Township, 4 June–17 December 1858, p. 139, line 1. Ancestry record 706930. Image examined, read 24 September 2026. Confirmed James H. Timberman, male, born June 4 1858 at Allowaystown, son of John Timberman & Rebecca; father a carpenter, residence Allowaystown; recorded 15 July 1858. The first contemporary record of his birth; it settles the day, which had rested on his 1919 death certificate alone. A tree birth of 4 January 1858 is wrong.
- S860New Jersey return of deaths, Upper Pittsgrove Township, Salem County, 1 June 1858 – 31 May 1859, p. 519, entry 3 — Mary Timberman. Ancestry collection 62483, record 715000 (image 004210790_00530). Image examined, read 28 September 2026. Confirmed Mary Timberman, female, married, 70, died [June] 6th [1858] at Upper Alloways Creek, born Upper Pittsgrove; parent Benjamin Burroughs; cause, consumption. It names her father, not her husband or children.
- S8611850 U.S. census — Samuel Timberman household, Pilesgrove Township, Salem County, New Jersey. Ancestry collection 8054, record 4598891 (image 4201733_00195). Image examined, read 28 September 2026. Confirmed Enumerated 5 September 1850, stamp 191, dwelling 381, family 389: Samuel Timberman, 71, farmer; Mary Timberman, 32 [sic]; Jonathan, 22, farm hand; Judith, 30; Harriet, 20; Charles, 6; all born New Jersey. No relationships are stated. The index turns Mary's 32 into a birth in 1788; the image says 32. John H. Timberman is not in the house.
- S862FamilySearch index, New Jersey marriages — Harriet Timberman and Moses Thomas. FamilySearch ark:/61903/1:1:HW84-6G3Z and Q29L-M4Z7. Index only; no image read (checked 28 September 2026). Probable Harriet Timberman married Moses Thomas; her parents are given as Sam'l and Mary Timberman. Independent, but gives no maiden name for Mary. FamilySearch also indexes a Samuel Timberman x Mary Ann Applegate marriage in Salem County (VW5G-Y2Y, FZK4-M9S), a second Samuel or a second wife.
- S1076FamilySearch New Jersey, Church Records, 1675–1970, index 1:1:QLY8-VG38 — Mary Burroughs, born 8 June 1788, Salem. Index only; the image (3:1:3Q9M-CS4V-RZW6) is in a restricted collection and returned “access denied”, so it has not been read. Checked 30 September 2026. Mary Burroughs, born 8 June 1788, Salem, New Jersey; father Benjamin Burroughs; mother Judith. Independent of the 1858 death return [S860] and agreeing with it on the father’s name and on the birth year (70 at death in June 1858). The same search returns a Mary Burroughs born 16 December 1830 at Salem to a Benjamin and Hannah, a later namesake kept apart.
