How to read this record
Every claim is tagged
Most family trees flatten everything into the same confident typeface. This one does not.
The three research tags below are the whole point of the exercise: they say what a document
proves, what the weight of evidence suggests, and what nobody has found yet. A fourth marks
what the family stated directly, where no document has been retrieved at all — it is kept
separate on purpose and is never quietly promoted to confirmed. A fifth, added on
13 September 2026, marks biological evidence: a DNA result is not a document, and it is not
testimony either. Two further labels mark where this page withholds information
rather than lacking it.
ConfirmedAttested by a document that was actually retrieved and read — a census sheet, a
government index, a grave marker, a family-written obituary.
ProbableStrongly supported but not nailed down: a user-contributed tree, a masked index field,
or a chain of consistent circumstances. Believable, not proven.
Not foundSearched for and not located. This is a statement about the search, not about the
person — the record may well exist somewhere unsearched.
Family testimonySupplied by the family and recorded on their word — no document has been retrieved for
it. Note the diamond rather than the dot: this is provenance, not proof, and it stands
apart from the three record tags above S24.
DNA evidenceBiological evidence consistent with a claim. It corroborates origins; it does
not by itself establish a person or a link. Note the bar rather than a dot or a diamond:
no DNA result on this page is ever counted as confirmed, because no document
was read for it S46.
Living — withheldThe person is living. By the privacy rule for this page, name and relationship are
shown, and at most a year the family has already published. Full dates of birth, ages,
places of residence and record identifiers are held back.
Research in progressA branch that is actively being worked on. The node exists in the structure so the
shape of the family is honest; the detail is simply not in yet.

Research status
Research status: PROBABLE — accepted by Earl 28 September 2026 pending more evidence. In the 1850 census of Whitley County, Kentucky, read from the image,
China, 14, born Kentucky, is in the household of
Jackson Parton, 37, a farmer born in Kentucky
S844. She fits the Chiney Parton, 16, who married Joseph Owens in Whitley County on 30 January 1852
S810, and China is a rare given name. What is weak: the 1850 census states no relationships, and no document names Jackson as China's father
Probable confirm or correct → Evidence: In the 1850 Whitley County, Kentucky, census, read from the image, China, 14, is in the household of Jackson Parton, 37; she fits the Chiney Parton who married Joseph Owens there in January 1852, and China is a rare name. Weak or missing: The 1850 census states no relationships and no record names China's father; the tree's 'Andrew', birthplace and 1898 Texas death are on no record read. Not yet confirmed. Know more? Census1860
🆕 By 1860 the family had probably moved to Texas:
A. J. Pardon, 43, farmer, born Kentucky, and Catherine, 43, lived near Sherman, Grayson County, with M., 18, John, 12, Sarah E., 9, and the Texas-born W. J., 6, and Silvester, 2; America A., 21, and her husband David A. Seaton shared the dwelling
Probable confirm or correct → S986. Evidence: M. and America A. fit Manuel and America of 1850
S844, and Pardon is the spelling on China's grandson's 1939 certificate
S780. Weak: the ages rose only six years in ten, and no record read expands “A. J.”. Know more? Use “Add to this record”. added 29 September 2026
Census1850
🆕 The 1850 agricultural schedule of the same Whitley County district, read from the image, lists his farm:

- S780Texas death certificate 71392: Charles W. Owens, died Austin, 6 July 1939. Ancestry record 21891220. Image examined in the Stage 2 reading, 26 September 2026. Confirmed Charles W. Owens, a produce salesman of 808 Clermont, Austin, born 9 March 1863 in Arkansas, died 6 July 1939; buried at Youngs Prairie, Elgin. Father Joseph Owens, born Arkansas; mother China Pardon, born Arkansas. Informant: his wife. 🆕 The Texas death index agrees: “Owens C. W.”, Travis County, 6 July 1939, certificate 71392 (Ancestry record 6218014, read 27 September 2026). His own certificate, informed by his widow, gives Arkansas, as do the 1900 and 1910 censuses; his daughter Medie's certificate and the 1930 census say Texas. The parents' names are secondhand and the spellings may be Chaney/Chana and Pardue/Purdon; no record of the couple has been read. Collection: Texas, U.S., Death Certificates.
- S810Kentucky marriage register, Whitley County: Joseph Owens and Chiney Parton, 30 January 1852. Ancestry record 4192 (roll 994058). Image examined, read 27 September 2026 (image KYVR_994058-0164). Probable Joseph Owens, 19, and Chiney Parton, 16, both single, living in and born in Whitley County, Kentucky, married “Jany 30th”. The year is a ditto mark: the only year on the page is “August 22nd 1852” in the first row, and the rows are out of date order, so the page is a compiled return and the year may be 1853. A Tennessee compiled index (Ancestry record 1034394) has China Parton and Joseph Owens married on 30 January 1853 in Claiborne County, Tennessee, which borders Whitley; the day and month agree, the year does not. Collection: Kentucky, U.S., Marriage Records, 1852–1914.
- S8441850 U.S. census — District No. 2, Whitley County, Kentucky, dwelling and family 410: Jackson Parton household, enumerated 12 September 1850. Ancestry collection 8054, record 17561454 (image 4192512_00169). Image examined, read 28 September 2026. Probable Jackson Parton, 37, farmer, real estate $300; Catharine, 37; China, 14; America, 12; Rachael, 10; Manuel, 8; Nancy, 6; William, 4, all born Kentucky. Sowder households, among them Polly Sowder, 66, are in the next dwellings. The 1850 census states no relationships. FamilySearch 1:1:M655-9K6 indexes the same page. Collection: 1850 United States Federal Census.
- S9861860 U.S. census — Grayson County, Texas, post office Sherman, page 8, 7 June 1860, dwelling 50. Ancestry record 35313138. Image examined in the Stage 2 reading, 28 September 2026. Probable A. J. Pardon, 43, farmer, born Kentucky, and Catherine, 43, born Kentucky, with M., 18, John, 12, and Sarah E., 9, born Kentucky, and W. J., 6, and Silvester, 2, born Texas. In the same dwelling: David A. Seaton, 25, born Missouri, and America A., 21, born Kentucky, with John A., 4, and M. E., 2. M., 18, fits Manuel, 8, and America A., 21, fits America, 12, in Jackson Parton's 1850 Whitley County household (S844); the spelling Pardon is also on China's grandson's 1939 certificate (S780). The parents' ages rose only six years between the two censuses, and “A. J.” is not expanded on any record read. The Texas births of W. J. and Silvester place the move from Kentucky about 1851–54. Also indexed as Ancestry record 35313136 (the same image).
- S10061840 United States Federal Census — Knox County, Kentucky (Calvin Hardy's division), page 6. Ancestry record 1274505. Image examined in the Stage 2 reading, 29 September 2026. Johnathan, William and Elizabeth (a woman of 40–49) Parton head neighbouring households. 1840 names only the heads. Whitley County, where the family was in 1850, was formed from Knox.
- S10071850 United States Federal Census, agricultural schedule — Whitley County, Kentucky, District No. 2, page 15 (13 September 1850). Ancestry record 20427. Image examined in the Stage 2 reading, 29 September 2026. Confirmed Line 37: Jackson Parton, 60 acres improved and 500 unimproved, farm worth $500, implements $10, 2 horses, 4 milch cows, 2 oxen, 10 other cattle, 60 swine, 500 bushels of corn and 60 of oats. Same district and month as the population schedule (S844). Ancestry offers the same image a second time under hint number 8620427.
