How to read this record
Every claim is tagged
Most family trees flatten everything into the same confident typeface. This one does not.
The three research tags below are the whole point of the exercise: they say what a document
proves, what the weight of evidence suggests, and what nobody has found yet. A fourth marks
what the family stated directly, where no document has been retrieved at all — it is kept
separate on purpose and is never quietly promoted to confirmed. A fifth, added on
13 September 2026, marks biological evidence: a DNA result is not a document, and it is not
testimony either. Two further labels mark where this page withholds information
rather than lacking it.
ConfirmedAttested by a document that was actually retrieved and read — a census sheet, a
government index, a grave marker, a family-written obituary.
ProbableStrongly supported but not nailed down: a user-contributed tree, a masked index field,
or a chain of consistent circumstances. Believable, not proven.
Not foundSearched for and not located. This is a statement about the search, not about the
person — the record may well exist somewhere unsearched.
Family testimonySupplied by the family and recorded on their word — no document has been retrieved for
it. Note the diamond rather than the dot: this is provenance, not proof, and it stands
apart from the three record tags above S24.
DNA evidenceBiological evidence consistent with a claim. It corroborates origins; it does
not by itself establish a person or a link. Note the bar rather than a dot or a diamond:
no DNA result on this page is ever counted as confirmed, because no document
was read for it S46.
Living — withheldThe person is living. By the privacy rule for this page, name and relationship are
shown, and at most a year the family has already published. Full dates of birth, ages,
places of residence and record identifiers are held back.
Research in progressA branch that is actively being worked on. The node exists in the structure so the
shape of the family is honest; the detail is simply not in yet.

Research status
Research status: CONFIRMED as the mother of
Mons Selland. The Røldal baptism register for 1868, read from the image, names his parents as the farmer Thore Thoresen Selland and his wife

In the record
Generation 6 — Kristin's 3rd-great-grandparents
- S74Røldal parish register — baptisms, 1868. Entry no. 7: born 9 May 1868, baptised 21 June 1868, child Mons, ægte (in wedlock); father Gbr. (farmer) Thore Thoresen Selland, mother Ingeborg Ivarsdatter. A primary church record, read by eye from the full-resolution scan rather than from an index or an OCR sidecar. Four of the six named witnesses are Lone and Hegerland people, which is what makes the Julia Lone lead worth chasing. Rødal is in Hordaland, at the head of the Hardanger valleys; Selland is the farm, not the family name.
- S77Røldal parish register — burials, folio 199, 1912. Men's sequence no. 3: died 5 June 1912, buried 12 June, Tore … Selland, of Selland, born 1820 at Selland. Women's sequence no. 2: died 9 May 1912, buried 18 May, Ingebjørg Ivarsdatter Selland, of Selland, born 1831 at Sauda. Read by eye. The printed column headings are wrong for this content — the clerk reused an Indflyttede (moved-in) form and overwrote the headings by hand as death date, burial date and birthplace; read the manuscript headings or every column shifts meaning. ⚠ The clerk also wrote the husband's patronymic as Ivarsson, which is his wife's. The 1868 baptism (S74) calls him Thoresen and the 1820 baptism (S76) gives his father as Tore Monsen, so Toreson is correct; and were Ivarsson right, he and his wife would be brother and sister. Recorded as a clerical slip, not a competing fact, so that the next reader of that image knows it was looked at.
- S1078FamilySearch indexes for the emigrant Mons Selland. South Dakota, County Naturalization Records, Deuel County, 1914: Mons Thorsen (Thorson) Selland, born 9 May 1868, Bergen, Norway, wife Julia (1:1:6C55-2RZM; image 3:1:3QS7-99WY-4DQT not read); Minnesota death index: Mons Torson Selland, born 9 May 1868, died 10 November 1964 (1:1:V4ZX-RK9). Index entries, checked 30 September 2026. Cited for identity only: the exact birth date and the patronymic Thorsen tie the man on the South Dakota farm to the Røldal baptism of 1868 [S74]. Neither index names his parents; the death date is an index, not a read certificate, and is not carried on his card as fact.
- S11001875 Norway Census — Røldal, household of Thore Thorsen. Ancestry record 1138042. Image examined in the Stage 2 reading, 1 October 2026. Confirmed Census of 31 December 1875: Thore Thorsen, head, married, farmer and owner, building carpenter and smith, born 1820 in Røldal; Engeborg Iversdtr, his wife, born 1831 at Søvde, Sands parish; their children Anders Thorsen, 1857, helping his father, Engeborg Thorsdtr, 1865, Mons Thorsen, 1868, and Engeborg Thorsdtr, 1873, all born in Røldal; a servant, two visitors from Suldal, and a lodger household. The farm name is not on this spread. The index reads her birthplace as “Sósde”; the image has Søvde. Two daughters named Engeborg, 1865 and 1873, are both listed.
- S11111910 Norway Census — Røldal, Selland, household 2, 1 December 1910. Ancestry record 58396. Image examined in the Stage 2 reading, 30 September 2026. Confirmed Tore T. Selland, head, married, føderaadsmand (retired farmer on a life annuity), born 3 June 1820 in the district; Ingeborg Selland, wife, born 15 March 1831. One image, indexed twice: Ancestry record 58397 is the same household under Ingeborg.
- S1112Norway, Church Records, 1812–1938 — register of marriages (Copulerede), 1847, folio 207, entry no. 2. Ancestry record 17258496. Image examined in the Stage 2 reading, 30 September 2026. Confirmed Banns read 16, 24 and 30 May 1847 for the bachelor Thor Thorsen Selland, 27, and the maid Ingeborg Ivarsdatter Hagerland, 16; sponsors Jørgen Lone (reading uncertain) and Osmund Selland. The wedding-date column is blank, so the page dates the banns, not the wedding. The parish is not written on the page; it comes from the collection’s catalogue. The index reads her as Iversdatter Hegerland; the image has Ivarsdatter Hagerland.
- S11261865 Census of Norway — Røldal parish, Haare and Tjønn school district, farm no. 89 (31 December 1865). Ancestry record 963829. Image examined in the Stage 2 reading, 30 September 2026. Confirmed Thore Thorsen, head of household, farmer and freeholder, married, 46, born Røldal; Ingeborg Iversdatter, his wife, married, 35, born Søvde parish, Sand; their sons Thore Thorsen, 14, and Iver Thoresen, 11, both born Røldal. The page ends with Iver. The online index adds an Anders Thoresen, who must be on the next page, which has not been read. The district name in the header is partly illegible.
- S11271900 Census of Norway — Suldal, personal list (3 December 1900). Ancestry record 1458853. Image examined in the Stage 2 reading, 30 September 2026. Confirmed Tore T. Selland, head, married, farmer and pensioner on a farm annuity (føderaad), born 1820, Røldal; Ingeborg I. Selland “the elder”, his wife, married, born 1831, Søvde. They are a household of two. The online index reads her birthplace as Romania; the image has “Rom”, an abbreviation for the county, written above Søvde. “The elder” suggests a younger Ingeborg Selland lived nearby.
