Research status

Research status: PROBABLE as the parents of William B. “Willie B.” Walker (1857–1914), husband of Nancy Jane Higginbotham Probable confirm or correct →. Evidence: Willie's own 1914 death certificate names his parents as Daniel Walker and Mary J. Brass (or Bross) S787; in 1900 his mother Mary J. Daniels, 69, lived with him in Jackson County, Texas S808; and his brother Edgar's 1941 certificate names Daniel Green Walker and Mary Jane Bross and gives Edgar's birth in California in 1861 S809. What is weak: Willie's certificate was informed by his widow and gives only “Daniel Walker”, without the Green; the 1900 link rests on the mother's remarried surname and a California birth; and the records disagree on birthplaces (Alabama for both parents on Willie's certificate and 1900 census, California on Edgar's, Louisiana for Mary in 1880). Approved by Earl 27 September 2026.

Evidence: Willie B. Walker's own 1914 death certificate names his parents as Daniel Walker and Mary J. Brass or Bross; in 1900 his mother, Mary J. Daniels, 69, lived in his household; his brother Edgar's 1941 certificate names Daniel Green Walker and Mary Jane Bross. Weak or missing: Willie's certificate was informed by his widow and omits "Green"; the 1900 link rests on the mother's remarried surname and a California birth; the records disagree on birthplaces; Daniel Green's dates come from an online tree, and by July 1870 Mary Jane was already in David Dannel's household in Louisiana, which does not fit a remarriage after a death in 1873. Life in the order the records give it

Census1870
🆕 Mary Jane married again, and earlier than the family tree allows: on 25 July 1870 M. J., 40, born Alabama, keeping house, was in the household of David Dannel, 70, a farmer born Louisiana, at Ward 6, Bossier Parish, Louisiana (P.O. Cotton Valley), with Andrew Dannel, 24, and three Walker boys: Tom, 20, born Mississippi, and Wallice, 14, and Edgar, 10, both born California Probable confirm or correct → S1079. Evidence: her age and Alabama birth, Edgar’s California birth, and the Dannels and Daniels surname she carries in 1880 and 1900. Weak: the census states no relationships, so David is only probably her second husband. Since she was in Louisiana by 1870, the family tree’s death of Daniel Green in California on 14 July 1873 cannot have come before her remarriage: either the couple had parted before 1870, or that death belongs to another Daniel Walker. Census1880
In 1880 she was Mary Dannels, 50, a widow in Angelina County, Texas, with her son Edgar, 18 S809, and in 1900 Mary J. Daniels, “Mother”, born June 1830 in Alabama, a widow and the mother of three children, in Willie B. Walker's household S808.
Death1815
Daniel Green's birth about 1815 in South Carolina and his death on 14 July 1873 at Columbia, Tuolumne County, California, come from an online family tree, not a record. Willie's certificate gives Willie's own birth at Columbia, California, in April 1857 S787, which fits.
Census1850
🆕 In 1850 the couple, Daniel Walker, 35, born South Carolina, and Mary, 19, born Alabama, with sons John, 2½, and an infant, lived in the Noxubee County, Mississippi, household of the postmaster John Bross S845; a Mississippi marriage index has Daniel Walker marrying Mary Bross S846. added 28 September 2026.

Family parents, marriages, children, siblings

Parents1850
🆕 Her father: probably John Bross Probable confirm or correct →, 49, born South Carolina, whose household she and Daniel shared in 1850 with Matilda Bross, 43 S845. What is weak: the census states no relationships. added 28 September 2026.
Parents1824
🆕 His father: probably Jarrett Walker Probable confirm or correct →, of Union District, South Carolina, whose will of 13 September 1824 names a son Daniel Walker among his children still under age S847. What is weak: nothing yet ties this Daniel to Union District
no middle name, deed or estate division — and Daniel Walker is a common name in South Carolina. The online tree's further step to Thomas Walker of Lunenburg County, Virginia, is still unsupported. See the Walker line. added 28 September 2026.

Open questions what is probable, weak or missing — confirm or correct it

Probable
🆕 Probably Daniel Green in California: in July 1860 Danl Walker, 45, a miner born South Carolina, was at Columbia, Tuolumne County Probable confirm or correct → S1067, and in July 1870 Daniel Walker, 56, a miner born South Carolina, was still at Columbia S1068. Evidence: age and birthplace agree with 1850 S845, and Columbia is where the family tree puts his death in 1873. Weak: he is alone with other miners in both years, and nothing on either page names his wife or children. Know more? Use “Add to this record”. added 29 September 2026
Probable
🆕 Probably Mary Jane in 1860, with the boys, while Daniel was in California: M. J. Walker, 30, a farmer born Mississippi, headed her own household at Ward 3, Claiborne Parish, Louisiana (P.O. Wiseville), with J. T., 12, D. G., 10, W. B., 6, and E. G., 1, next door to John Bross, 35, born South Carolina, and M. R. Bross, 65 Probable confirm or correct → S1071. Evidence: her age, the sons J. T. and the infant of 1850 S845, and the Bross family next door. Weak: initials only, no relationships stated, and Mississippi rather than the Alabama of 1850 S845. W. B., 6, born Mississippi about 1854, does not agree with the 11 April 1857 California birth on Willie’s death certificate S787, so that date is left as it is. Know more? 1. S787Texas death certificate 12730: Willie Bernard Walker, died Lolita, Jackson County, 27 June 1914. Ancestry record 21516133. Image examined in the Stage 2 reading, 26 September 2026. Confirmed Willie Bernard Walker, farmer, born 11 April 1857 at Columbia, California (his age, 57 years 2 months 16 days, agrees), died 27 June 1914 of pellagra, asthma contributing; buried in Lolita Cemetery on 28 June. Parents given as Daniel Walker and Mary J. Brass (or Bross), born Alabama. Informant: Mrs. W. B. Walker. 🆕 The Texas death index agrees: “Walker, Willie Bernard”, Jackson County, 27 June 1914, certificate 12730 (Ancestry record 6333149, read 27 September 2026); it has no birthplace column. Corrects the tree's 10 April 1858. It is the first record to name his parents; that he is Daniel Jonah Walker's father is still probable (S406). Collection: Texas, U.S., Death Certificates.
  2. S8081900 U.S. census — Justice Precinct 2, Jackson County, Texas, sheet 16, dwelling 296: Willie B. Walker household. Ancestry record 43657783. Image examined, read 27 September 2026 (ED 59, sheets 16A–16B, lines 47–53). Probable Willie B. Walker, head, born April 1858, 42, born California, both parents born Alabama; a farmer owning a mortgaged farm; Nancy J., wife, 35, born Alabama; Neomi, 13; Robert, 12; Jackson J., 10, born March 1890; Ruth E., 2; and, on line 53, Mary J. Daniels, “Mother”, born June 1830, 69, widowed, mother of three children, born Alabama, her parents born South Carolina. Mary J. Daniels is taken as Mary Jane (Bross) Walker, remarried after Daniel Green Walker died: the 1880 “Mary Dannels” of Angelina County, with her son Edgar (S809). Her Alabama birth matches the birthplace given for Willie's mother, not Nancy J.'s (whose mother was born in South Carolina). Jackson J.'s birth month and year, from the index, are Daniel Jonah Walker's (10 March 1890), but the given name does not match. Collection: 1900 United States Federal Census.
  3. S809Texas death certificate: Edgar Bross Walker, died Precinct 3, Angelina County, 2 March 1941. Ancestry record 21818204, certificate 10777. Image examined, read 27 September 2026. Probable Edgar Bross Walker, of Clawson, born 26 April 1861, California, aged 79; father Daniel Green Walker, born “Cal.”, mother Mary Jane Bross, born “Cal.”; informant B. C. Walker of Lufkin. Willie B. Walker's probable brother, cited only as evidence for their parents; he is not given a card. In 1880 Edgar, 18, was in Precinct 1, Angelina County, with his widowed mother “Mary Dannels”, 50, born Louisiana (census index read 27 September 2026), so the birthplaces disagree: California for both parents here, Alabama on Willie's certificate and census, Louisiana for Mary in 1880. Collection: Texas, U.S., Death Certificates.
  4. S8451850 U.S. census — Noxubee County, Mississippi, dwelling and family 22: John Bross household, enumerated 28 August 1850. Ancestry collection 8054, record 3503912 (image 4200050_00008). Image examined, read 28 September 2026. Probable John Bross, 49, post master, $800, born South Carolina; Matilda, 43, born South Carolina; John W., 23; Lavenia, 16, born Alabama; Daniel Walker, 35, born South Carolina; Mary Walker, 19, born Alabama; John Walker, 2½, and an infant Walker, one month, born Mississippi. The 1850 census states no relationships. FamilySearch 1:1:M4L6-1S3 indexes the same page. Collection: 1850 United States Federal Census.
  5. S846Mississippi marriage index — Daniel Walker and Mary Bross. FamilySearch record V284-H4N (Mississippi Marriages, 1800–1911). Index entry only — no image was examined, read 28 September 2026. Probable Daniel Walker married Mary Bross. Names no parents. Index only; the date and county were not captured here.
  6. S847Will of Jarrett Walker, Union District, South Carolina, signed 13 September 1824. Will book (typescript copy), pp. 104–105; Ancestry collection 9080, record 36897 (image 004754061_00271). Image examined, read 28 September 2026. Probable “my dear beloved wife Sarah Walker” … “to support and to school the under named children … until they become of age or get married (Viz) Thomas Walker, Mary Walker, Elizabeth H. Walker, Robert Y. Walker, Martha D. Walker, Daniel Walker, Henry C. Walker, Sarah Walker, Juliet A. T. Walker”; son William Walker a colt; executors Sarah Walker and Thomas Walker; witnesses Reuben Gilliam, John Thomas, John Morgan. Proven and ordered recorded about 7 March 1825 (the year is not fully clear), William Rice, Ordinary. A typescript copy of the will book, not the original page. It does not show that this Daniel is Daniel Green Walker.
  7. S10671860 United States Federal Census — Township 2, Tuolumne County, California, P.O. Columbia, page 124, dwelling 2098, family 2031. Ancestry record 650744. Image examined in the Stage 2 reading, 27 September 2026. Probable 12 July 1860: Danl Walker, 45, male, miner, personal estate $400, born South Carolina; Levi Norton, 26, miner, in the same household. Age and South Carolina birth agree with the 1850 census (S845), and Columbia is where the family tree puts his death in 1873. No wife or child is with him, and nothing else on the page ties this miner to the family.
  8. S10681870 United States Federal Census — Township 2, Tuolumne County, California, P.O. Columbia, page 88, dwelling 1174. Ancestry record 12260869. Image examined in the Stage 2 reading, 27 September 2026. Probable 18 July 1870: Daniel Walker, 56, male, miner, born South Carolina, a citizen over 21; John Gibbons, 34, miner, born Ireland, in the same dwelling. Age (born about 1814) and birthplace agree with 1850 and 1860, at Columbia three years before the family tree’s death date. No family is with him.
  9. S10711860 United States Federal Census — Ward 3, Claiborne Parish, Louisiana, P.O. Wiseville, page 117 (stamped 681), dwellings 777 and 778. Ancestry record 38234564. Image examined in the Stage 2 reading, 27 September 2026. Probable 30 July 1860: dwelling 777, John Bross, 35, farmer, born South Carolina, with M. L.(?), 20, born Mississippi, three small boys born Louisiana, and M. R., 65, born South Carolina; dwelling 778, M. J. Walker, 30, female, farmer, born Mississippi, with J. T., 12, D. G., 10, W. B., 6, and E. G., 1, all male, birthplaces dittoed Mississippi. Daniel is not in the household. The same page is indexed for W. B. as Ancestry record 38234567, which is held. Her age, the sons J. T. and E. G. fitting the 1850 household (S845), and a Bross family next door. Initials only and no relationships; W. B., 6, born Mississippi, does not agree with the 1857 California birth on Willie’s death certificate (S787).
  10. S10791870 United States Federal Census — Ward 6, Bossier Parish, Louisiana, P.O. Cotton Valley, dwelling 359. Ancestry record 28289426. Image examined in the Stage 2 reading, 30 September 2026. Probable 25 July 1870: Dannel, David, 70, farmer, born Louisiana; M. J., 40, female, keeping house, born Alabama; Andrew, 24, farmer, born Mississippi; Walker, Tom, 20, born Mississippi; Wallice, 14, born California; Edgar, 10, born California. No relationships are stated. M. J.’s age and Alabama birth fit Mary J. Daniels, born June 1830 in Alabama, of 1900 [S808], and Edgar, 10, born California, fits Edgar Bross Walker, born there in 1861 [S809]. The index makes David her father; on the page he is far more likely her second husband.

Compiled for the Proeger family

Living adults appear by name and relationship, with the year only: no full date of birth and no home town on any page that search engines index, and a living person’s own page is kept out of search engines. Minors appear by name only — no date of birth, no birth year, no age, no school, no place, no address, no other identifying detail. A minor may be named and may appear in a family photograph; nothing further about them is published. Where it is not established whether someone is an adult or a minor, the minor rule applies.
