Life in the order the records give it

Birth1924
Born 21 February 1924, Salado, Bell County, Texas S33S34
Death2002
Died 14 March 2002, Hays County, Texas; buried Austin Memorial Park Cemetery, plot 1-566-7 S34
Military1941
United States Marine Corps, 12 August 1941 – 17 September 1945
enlisted four months before Pearl Harbor, at seventeen S33. His stone reads "Married to Lucille / He served in WW2 in the U.S. Marines" S34. The muster rolls, service number 319512, place him in 1944 as a corporal in Battery M, 4th Battalion, 12th Marines — the 3rd Marine Division's artillery regiment, a 105 mm howitzer battery, "in the field" — and in 1945 as a sergeant at the San Diego recruit depot S33. ⚠️ No campaign is claimed for him here. The rolls put his battalion in the Pacific; which landings he personally took part in is not something a muster roll says, and it is not inferred
Census1950
1950 census: head of household, house 605, Austin, Travis County, ED 256-3, aged 26, with Lucille (24), Thomas A. (4) and Sandra M. (1) S32
Census1950
In 1950 he was a candy salesman for a wholesale candy company, at 605 Brest, Austin S220
He and Lucille retired to Wimberley, Hays County — the shared ZIP on both their records — and died there, fourteen months apart, before being buried together in Austin S33.

Family parents, marriages, children, siblings

Marriage1945
Married Lucille Lorine Kretschmar in 1945, the year he was released S34
Parents
Son of Thomas W. Caffey and Medie
named in his Social Security NUMIDENT record, a government document whose parent fields come from his own application S33

Corroborating names on the same page, as the OCR spells them: Aus-Tin, Kret-Zschmar, Ladush.

Quoted text is the Portal's own OCR of this page, copied verbatim. OCR of 1960s newsprint drops punctuation and mis-reads letters — "Caffey" is read as "Caffcy", "Caftey" and "Cafley" on these pages; the page image is authoritative and should be read before treating any wording as exact.

  1. S321950 US Census, Austin, Travis County, Texas, ED 256-3, lines 8–11, house no. 605 — Caffey, Thomas W (head, 26); Lucille L (wife, 24); Thomas A (son, 4); Sandra M (daughter, 1). Read off the page image, not the OCR index. The record that fixes Kristin's paternal grandparents. ⚠️ Austin's enumeration districts are filed under county="Austin, Travis", so a county=Travis query misses them entirely — sweep the state.

Compiled for the Proeger family

Living adults appear in full, on the same terms as everyone else here: what the records say, each claim cited. Minors appear by name only — no date of birth, no birth year, no age, no school, no place, no address, no other identifying detail. A minor may be named and may appear in a family photograph; nothing further about them is published. Where it is not established whether someone is an adult or a minor, the minor rule applies.
