How to read this record
Every claim is tagged
Most family trees flatten everything into the same confident typeface. This one does not.
The three research tags below are the whole point of the exercise: they say what a document
proves, what the weight of evidence suggests, and what nobody has found yet. A fourth marks
what the family stated directly, where no document has been retrieved at all — it is kept
separate on purpose and is never quietly promoted to confirmed. A fifth, added on
13 September 2026, marks biological evidence: a DNA result is not a document, and it is not
testimony either. Two further labels mark where this page withholds information
rather than lacking it.
ConfirmedAttested by a document that was actually retrieved and read — a census sheet, a
government index, a grave marker, a family-written obituary.
ProbableStrongly supported but not nailed down: a user-contributed tree, a masked index field,
or a chain of consistent circumstances. Believable, not proven.
Not foundSearched for and not located. This is a statement about the search, not about the
person — the record may well exist somewhere unsearched.
Family testimonySupplied by the family and recorded on their word — no document has been retrieved for
it. Note the diamond rather than the dot: this is provenance, not proof, and it stands
apart from the three record tags above S24.
DNA evidenceBiological evidence consistent with a claim. It corroborates origins; it does
not by itself establish a person or a link. Note the bar rather than a dot or a diamond:
no DNA result on this page is ever counted as confirmed, because no document
was read for it S46.
Living — withheldThe person is living. By the privacy rule for this page, name and relationship are
shown, and at most a year the family has already published. Full dates of birth, ages,
places of residence and record identifiers are held back.
Research in progressA branch that is actively being worked on. The node exists in the structure so the
shape of the family is honest; the detail is simply not in yet.

Life in the order the records give it
Birth1898
Born 26 July 1898, California
the day is from the California Death Index
S316; enumerated as a two-year-old
daughter in her
own father's household in the 1900 census, Washington Township, Alameda County, where she and her
twin brother Edward are bracketed "Twins"
S55. That is what lifts her from a name in a
parent field to a documented person with parents of her own.
Census1920
In
1920 she is in her husband's parents' house, indexed by OCR as
"Mildresk" Silva, born 1899 California
S48Photograph—
A photograph of Mildred and William Springer by a picket fence, late 1930s or 1940s, from Patricia Collins’s collection, is in Photos below with its AI-assisted enhanced version.
Death1960
Died 7 October 1960, Alameda County, California, as Mildred A Springer
Confirmed (index; certificate not seen)
California Death Index 1940–1997:
born 26 July 1898, California, mother's maiden name
Mendonca S316. The birth date matches the
1900 twins entry and the maiden name matches her mother's, so this is her.
The 1960 date is restored.
It was withdrawn on 14 September because searches under Silva and Rose found nothing; she had remarried and died as Springer.
Photograph1915
🆕 A
studio portrait of two couples, about 1915–1920 Confirmed (family testimony): Mildred and her first husband
Frank Da Silva Jr, with her sister
Helen (Rose) and Helen’s husband
Victor Johnson, as her granddaughter
Patricia (Proeger) Collins named them on 1 October 2026 (Helen is Mrs. Victor Johnson in Mildred’s 1960 death notice; Patti confirmed the name). ⚠️ Helen married Victor only after her first husband William Farrell was killed on 10 June 1946 (she was still Mrs. O’Farrell in 1942), and Frank Jr died in 1924, so the man beside Helen in this photograph may be Farrell; not settled. In Photos below.
Family parents, marriages, children, siblings
Children1918
Her daughter's 1918 birth index entry carries Rose in the
mother's-maiden-name field
independent corroboration from a vital-records index
S56Marriage1918
Married
Frank T. Silva (Frank Silva Jr) before September 1918, when he named "Wife Mildred Silva" on his draft card; in January 1920 the couple were in his father's household
S48. Later surname
Springer S316.
Children—
A
three-generation photograph shows her with her daughter Aileane and granddaughter Nancy
S323; it is in Photos below and her portrait above is cut from it.

Not found
Second marriage, to
William Springer, after Frank Silva Jr died in 1924; date and place not yet found. Her granddaughter
Patricia (Proeger) Collins named him on 1 October 2026
Confirmed (family testimony): “My Grandmother. Moms Mother. And her second husband William Springer.” She died as Mildred A Springer
S316.
The 1950 census finds
Mildred Springer, 51, born California, with her husband
William Springer, 50, born California, an auto parts salesman, in Oakland, Alameda County
Probable (name, age, birthplace and husband match; nothing else on the entry ties it to her)

In the record
Generation 4 — Earl's great-grandparents
- S48US Census, 1920 — Washington Judicial Township (originally Washington, ED 213), Alameda County; household 132, sheet 8B line 62. FamilySearch
ark:/61903/1:1:MH38-KY1. Frank Silva, 22, married, born California 1898, relationship to head of household: "Son", both parents born Portugal; in the household with "Mildresk" Silva, born 1899 California — an OCR mangling of Mildred. The relationship column is what makes the father–son link a record rather than an inference from a "Jr" on a headstone. - S55US Census, 1900 — Washington Township, ED 405, Alameda County; household 24, sheet 1B line 93. FamilySearch
ark:/61903/1:1:M9PW-6X9. Antone Rose, Head, born February 1840, Portugal, arrival 1870, married 21 years, his own parents both Portugal-born; Louise Rose, Wife, age 44, Portugal (her birth-year column reads 1865, contradicting her own age); Mildred Rose, Daughter, born July 1898, California. The same township as the Silvas, one enumeration district over. ⚠️ These records say "Portugal," not "Azores," and this page does not upgrade them to match the Silvas. "Rose" is the standard Anglicisation of Portuguese Rosa / Roza. 🔑 SUPPLEMENT, 22 September 2026 — the same page re-served (rid 36140745) and read at full resolution. The children are named: Rose (Nov 1879, already married), Louise (June 1885), Antone (June 1887), Joseph (Oct 1888), Frank (May 1891), Edward and Mildred (July 1898), bracketed as twins, and Helen (Oct 1899). ⚠ The mother's age column (44) and birth-year column disagree; the age governs, agreeing with S201, so she was born c.1855–56. - S56California Birth Index, 1905–1995 — Aileane Silva, born 15 August 1918, Alameda, California, FamilySearch
ark:/61903/1:1:V256-J8H. The index's single associated surname is the mother's maiden name, and it reads Rose — corroborating Mildred Rose as her mother from a vital-records index rather than from NUMIDENT or a user tree. Its limit, stated: the index does not print the mother's given name, so it establishes the surname Rose, not specifically "Mildred A." - S316California Death Index, 1940–1997 — Mildred A Springer. FamilySearch record
VPWY-81H, read 23 September 2026. Born 26 July 1898, California; died 7 October 1960, Alameda County; mother's maiden name Mendonca. An index; the certificate has not been seen. The birth date matches the July 1898 twins entry of the 1900 census (S55) and the mother's maiden name matches Louise Rose's, so this is Mildred A. Rose under a later married surname. FamilySearch also attaches this row, wrongly, to her mother as a death record. - S323FamilySearch Memory 9943586 — three-generation photograph. Original upload, 1044 × 1572 px, uploaded 7 September 2014; downloaded 23 September 2026. Uploader's comment, 28 November 2016: “Mildred Rose/Silva on the left, Aileane Silva/Proeger on the right, Nancy Proeger in front. Three generations my mom, grandmother and great grandmother.” Undated. The identifications are the uploader's, Mildred's great-granddaughter.
