How to read this record
Every claim is tagged
Most family trees flatten everything into the same confident typeface. This one does not.
The three research tags below are the whole point of the exercise: they say what a document
proves, what the weight of evidence suggests, and what nobody has found yet. A fourth marks
what the family stated directly, where no document has been retrieved at all — it is kept
separate on purpose and is never quietly promoted to confirmed. A fifth, added on
13 September 2026, marks biological evidence: a DNA result is not a document, and it is not
testimony either. Two further labels mark where this page withholds information
rather than lacking it.
ConfirmedAttested by a document that was actually retrieved and read — a census sheet, a
government index, a grave marker, a family-written obituary.
ProbableStrongly supported but not nailed down: a user-contributed tree, a masked index field,
or a chain of consistent circumstances. Believable, not proven.
Not foundSearched for and not located. This is a statement about the search, not about the
person — the record may well exist somewhere unsearched.
Family testimonySupplied by the family and recorded on their word — no document has been retrieved for
it. Note the diamond rather than the dot: this is provenance, not proof, and it stands
apart from the three record tags above S24.
DNA evidenceBiological evidence consistent with a claim. It corroborates origins; it does
not by itself establish a person or a link. Note the bar rather than a dot or a diamond:
no DNA result on this page is ever counted as confirmed, because no document
was read for it S46.
Living — withheldThe person is living. By the privacy rule for this page, name and relationship are
shown, and at most a year the family has already published. Full dates of birth, ages,
places of residence and record identifiers are held back.
Research in progressA branch that is actively being worked on. The node exists in the structure so the
shape of the family is honest; the detail is simply not in yet.

Research status
Research status: PROBABLE, accepted by Earl 28 September 2026 pending more evidence, and added to the tree on his approval of 30 September 2026. Her place as
mother of Alice Lorene Piland is read from census images: in 1930 at Austin the relationship column names Alice Lorena, 15, as her daughter
S924 Confirmed; her birth, death and parents rest on the index of her death certificate
S907. Added 30 September 2026
Evidence: In 1920 in Hays County, read from the image, Mabel, 24, is the wife of Orvin O. Piland with their daughter Alice L., 5; in 1930 at Austin, read from the image, Mable Piland, 34, a widow, heads the household with her daughter Alice Lorena, 15, and her mother Virginia Logue, 62; in 1950 she is Mabel L. Piland, mother-in-law, in Thomas O. Caffey's household; the index of her Texas death certificate gives her birth on 31 October 1895 at Galveston, her death on 13 April 1961 at Austin, and her father as D. C. Logue. Weak or missing: The death certificate is read from its index only, not the image; it gives Galveston as her birthplace while the 1900 census has the family in Waco; a FamilySearch birth index for her daughter calls her Mabel Larrimore Logue, and the Larrimore name has not been explained. Confirmed S1091Family parents, marriages, children, siblings
Marriage1920
Wife of
Orbin Oliver Piland: in 1920 in Hays County, read from the image, “Orvin O. Piland”, 26, heads the household with his wife Mabel, 24, and their daughter Alice L., 5
S910; in 1922 the Austin directory lists “Piland Orbin O (Mabel)” at 104 Chicon
S941Children1914
Mother of
Alice Lorene Piland, born 20 November 1914 at Kyle, Hays County, by FamilySearch’s index of Texas births, which names her parents as Orbin Oliver Piland and Mabel Larrimore Logue
S923; Alice married
Thomas Osborn Caffey in Austin on 15 December 1935
S621Parents1900
Daughter of
Dan Crutcher Logue and
Virginia Alice Hamby: her death certificate names her father as D. C. Logue
S907; in 1900 “Mable”, 4, born October 1895 in Texas, is in the Waco household of D. C. Logue and his wife Virginia A.
S906; in 1910 Mabel, 14, is with Dan C. and Virginia A. Logue at Cuero
S1080; in 1930 her widowed mother Virginia Logue lives with her
S924 Probable confirm or correct →Marriage1930
A widow by April 1930, after Orbin’s death in September 1929
S924S911. In 1950, aged 54, she lived in Austin with her daughter Alice and son-in-law Thomas O. Caffey, a city fireman
S518Siblings1892
🆕 Younger sister of
Leola Logue Piland, born at Galveston on 28 November 1892, whose death certificate, read from the image, names the same parents, D. C. Logue and Virginia Alice
S1113; the two girls are together in their parents’ household at Waco in 1900
S906 and at Cuero in 1910
S1080Open questions what is probable, weak or missing — confirm or correct it
Weak or missing
What is weak or missing: the death certificate is read from its index only, so her birth at Galveston, her death date and her father’s name have not been seen on the image; the 1900 census that puts her in the Logue household at Waco is now read from the image, and her elder sister Leola’s death certificate, read from the image, puts Leola’s own birth at Galveston in November 1892
S1113, so the family seems to have lived at Galveston in the early 1890s, between the 1890 Alabama marriage and the 1900 Waco census; FamilySearch’s birth index for her daughter calls her “Mabel Larrimore Logue”, and where the Larrimore name comes from has not been found

Logue, 42, head; his wife Virginia A., 32, born July 1867 in Tennessee, married ten years; daughter “Mable”, 4, born October 1895 in Texas. C., born November 1857, grocery salesman; Virginia A., born July 1867, Tennessee, married ten years, the mother of five children, four living; Ethel, born January 1891 in Alabama; Leola; Mable, born October 1895; Hazel; Halbert, born February 1900. The image agrees with the index. It gives D. C.’s birth as November 1857, a year before the 24 November 1858 of his Find a Grave memorial [S909]; Ethel’s Alabama birth in 1891 fits the 1890 Calhoun County marriage [S908].
- S907Texas death certificate index — Mabel Logue Piland, 13 April 1961, Austin. Ancestry record 23640738. Born 31 October 1895, Galveston; died 13 April 1961, Austin, Travis County; father D. C. Logue. Probable Read from the index only; the certificate image has not been examined. The Galveston birthplace sits against the 1900 Waco household (S906); the family may have moved. Second citation, added 1 October 2026: the Texas state death index for 1961, page 971, Ancestry record 5099606, image examined, reads “PILAND MABEL LOGUE | TRAVIS | APR 13 | 24560”, the same death and file number. It is still an index; the certificate itself, with her birthplace and parents, has not been seen.
- S9101920 U.S. census — Piland household, Hays County, Texas. Ancestry collection 6061, record 43429362 (the page image is also reached through record 43429363). “Arvin P.”, 26; wife Mabel, 24; daughter Alice L., 5. Image examined, read 28 September 2026. Confirmed Precinct 2, ED 119, sheet 5B: the enumerator wrote Orvin O. Piland, head, 26, born in Texas; Mabel, wife, 24; Alice L. Piland, daughter, 5, all born in Texas. Ancestry's index reads the name as “Arvin P.”; the image reads “Orvin O.”, the same initials as Orbin Oliver. Updated 29 September 2026: it was first cited from the index only.
- S911Texas death certificate index — Orbin Oliver Piland, 30 September 1929. Ancestry collection 2272, record 23497175. Born 24 March 1893; parents E. R. Piland and Virginia F. Montgomery. Probable Read from the index only; the image has not been examined.
- S923FamilySearch index, Texas Births and Christenings, 1840–1981 — Alice Lorene Piland, born 20 November 1914, Kyle, Hays County. FamilySearch record 4LVY-XPMM, checked 28 September 2026. Probable Father Orbin Oliver Piland; mother Mabel Larrimore Logue. An index only; no image. It is independent of the 1920 and 1930 censuses, and its date matches the Social Security index.
- S9241930 U.S. census — Mable Piland household, Austin, Travis County, Texas. Ancestry collection 6224, record 60697622. Image examined, read 28 September 2026. Confirmed ED 227-29, sheet 3A: Mable Piland, head, 34, widowed, born in Texas; Alice Lorena, daughter, 15, born in Texas; Virginia Logue, mother, 62, widowed, born in Tennessee. Mabel is widowed by April 1930, which fits Orbin's death in 1929.
- S941Austin, Texas, city directory, 1922, p. 373. Ancestry record 402287283. Image examined, read 29 September 2026. Confirmed Piland Orbin O (Mabel), truck driver, Texas Company, residence 104 Chicon. Nine other Pilands are listed in Austin.
- S10801910 United States Federal Census — Cuero, Ward 2, DeWitt County, Texas, ED 34, sheet 5A, dwelling 88. Ancestry record 168623911. Image examined in the Stage 2 reading, 30 September 2026. Probable Logue, Dan C., 52, manager of a cotton mill; Virginia A., 41, married 21 years, the mother of seven children, six living, born Tennessee; Leola, 17; Mabel, 14; Halbert, 10; and two younger sons. “Married 21 years” points to about 1889, a year before the 1890 licence [S908], within ordinary census error.
- S1091U.S., City Directories, 1822–1995 — Austin City Directory 1932–33 (Morrison & Fourmy), page 379, column 1. Ancestry record 399606365. Image examined in the Stage 2 reading, 1 October 2026. Confirmed “Piland Mabel L Mrs slswn F & W Grand Silver Store r403 W 14th”: a saleswoman, rooming (‘r’) at 403 West 14th Street. No husband is entered in brackets, which fits her widowhood from September 1929 (S911, S924). The same page carries other Austin Pilands; their relationship to her is not stated.
- S1113Texas, Death Certificates, 1903–1982 — Leola Piland, Austin, Travis County, 12 February 1938, file 10327. Ancestry record 83530008. Image examined in the Stage 2 reading, 1 October 2026. Confirmed Mrs. Leola Piland, of Manor Road, Austin, married, wife of Ruben Piland; born 28 November 1892 at Galveston, Texas; aged 45 years, 2 months, 14 days; a housewife. Father D. C. Louge [sic], born in Tennessee; mother “Virginaa Alice” [sic], no maiden name given, born in Texas. Died 12 February 1938 at Seton Infirmary, Austin; buried in Oakwood Cemetery, Austin, 13 February 1938. Informant: Ruben Piland. Louge is a transposed Logue. The informant was her husband, not a family member of her parents’ generation; he gives her mother’s birthplace as Texas where the 1900, 1910 and 1950 censuses all say Tennessee.
- S1191FamilySearch index, California, County Marriages, 1850–1953 — Victor Quillen Logue and Mildred Warner Pool, 4 December 1926, Los Angeles. FamilySearch record K8NF-XF6, checked 1 October 2026. Probable Groom’s father D. C. Logue; mother Alice Hanby. An index only; the image has not been read.
